As 2011 comes to an end, I want to thank everyone who has taken the time from their busy lives to help make Keep Up With the Web a place where we can all learn from each other. I truly appreciate the conversations that we’ve had and I look forward to continuing to help each other grow our businesses, engage our readers and website visitors and reach our individual goals.

Some Core Beliefs

The amount of competition that we all face is steadily increasing. To differentiate ourselves, we need to understand our goals and develop a business strategy to meet them.

My personal goal is to grow my consulting and coaching business. My business strategy is to become a trusted resource by engaging with my audience and building trust. In doing this, I can help entrepreneurs and small business owners develop their online presence on the Internet. A presence that successfully builds your brand and delivers your message can help to level the playing field. Creating an online presence is key to be able to compete with bigger businesses with deeper pockets.

A Time to Reflect

As someone who often imposes self-inflicted deadlines, I often find myself adding to my “to do” list, updating it as I complete tasks and sometimes feeling generally stressed out over not feeling very productive. What’s important is to not lose focus of the big picture – the overall strategy and goals that I have. Sometimes, we need to take time to relax, regroup and re-energize.

As I look to 2012, I see many opportunities to refocus my efforts to be more innovative. I have lots of ideas to implement and I’m excited to take some time to focus on my website and clarify what it is that I do. (Special thanks to those of you who have listened to me and who have brainstormed with me. I know we have helped each other.)

It makes it more personal and it will definitely help you build awareness.

  4. I don’t think it’s a good idea to continue with the business strategy from the past years. Every new year should be started with new strategies because things evolve during 365 days, you learn lots of new stuff which should be included in the strategy (or erased, with you find out it’s a wrong practice).

    1. Hi Stacy,
      I wouldn’t recommend starting each year with new strategies. If strategies are effective, why would you discard them? What’s important is to track and measure throughout the year. Tweak or discard what’s not working while keeping an eye out for new opportunities. Some business don’t succeed because they keep jumping around trying the flavor of the month and that needs to be curtailed as well.

    I just discovered your blog from Gail at GrowMap…really like what you have going on here!
    I have been reflecting on 2011 and thinking ahead to 2012. For me, I need to find more time to devote to my online ventures and stay focused. I have a tendency to start something and then lose interest several weeks later.

    In regards to your question, I am always interested in how to increase target traffic to my sites…that is a topic I would love to read more about on your blog in the future.

      It’s great to see you here. Gail has a great blog. Thanks for letting me know that you found me there. I definitely can relate to your need to find more time and stay focused. I have at least one project that I have been trying to complete and just haven’t been able to find the time. “Focus” needs to be my word for 2012.

  10. Sherryl, As a Business owner, with a number of Brands, I’d like to comment that 2011 was a year of learning for someone who thought he’d got Business and internet marketing licked. However, with the onset of the year maintaining 10 fulltime employees, I found Decemer approaching with the workforce shrunk and our retail department closed. Don’t for one minute feel any pitty- it was a good business decission that, for some strange reason to do with cashflow, profit and loss, has left us in a better position than we were at the beginning of the recession. My point to this post? Life is about picking yourself up, dusting yourself down and looking at the business plan with a clear head. As a result, I’ve moved the online marketing in a new direction, with a leaner, meaner company to boot! Bring on 2012, I can’t wait!

    Seems like you’ve been doing a wonderful job with sharing content on this blog and I have no doubt that whatever goals you set for 2012 will be achieved. I’ll have to be sure and stop by more often to see what you’ll be sharing and I have no doubt I can learn plenty from you myself.

    I have a few things up my sleeve for this year but my main focus will be on building my network marketing business. I had so much going this past year that I didn’t give it the attention it deserved so I’ve made myself a promise to do just that.

    I’m excited about what 2012 holds in store for us all and hope you are as well. Keep up the excellent work and I have no doubt everything will come your way this year.

  12. Sherryl, I always learn something new when I read each and every one of your blog posts. Your ability to explain technical things in an easy to understand way is really quite a gift and I’m so grateful to have found you. Toward the middle of the year, I think I started to develop the education side of my blog and want to continue that in 2012. I am very passionate about doing that as well as using Twitter to continue to build relationships and advocate for epilepsy education and caregiving resources. (Believe me when I say I am the last person to have thought I would love Twitter!) I love doing that so much I want to find a way to make money from the blog so I can eventually do that full time or at least a good part of the time. (I’m too new at this to know if that’s realistic, but I want to give it a shot). Sponsorships from businesses that my readers would benefit from are where I plan to start. If you have any articles related to that (or if you write about it in 2012), that would be of great help. Can’t wait to learn more from you in 2012.

  13. I really like what you said about making our business/blog different from others to stand out. I have tons of ideas and never enough time which brings me to what I want to work on in my business for 2012. I plan on researching outsourcing more this year. That’s a good problem to have though.

    1. Sharon,
      Having enough time is a problem most if not all of us cope with daily. This year, I’m making a real effort to make the most of my time by not doing some of the things that aren’t producing results.

      Outsourcing is definitely something else to look at. In the last comment that you left, you mentioned how your older children help you. In the past, I’ve had success hiring interns from the local university. They get college credit, the university handles payroll and legal issues, the student learns and you get your work done. It can be a win-win for everyone. Some high schools have these programs too.

  20. Your business strategy of “engaging clients & building trust” have come through loud and clear in your writing and communication style. It is heart warming to see such integrity and an authentic desire to provide value to others.

    I’d like to think I’ll do the same in 2012. Building my parent coaching practice and offering more educational workshops is a priority. I’ll be taking a stronger hands on approach and rely less on crossing long bridges that “might” lead somewhere.

    Lastly, in coaching school, I learned that when we say “yes” to one thing, we are often saying “no” to something else. In 2012 I’m going to make sure that my “yes” answers do not say “no” to personal time or to my family and friends. Work will always be there but my son will make me an empty nester in two short years. I want to make the most of my time with my family.

    What you have been doing is clearly working. I can see that you have many genuine readers, a low Alexa rank and a great blog. For a site that is less than two years old, I think that you have done remarkably well.
    For me 2012 means a new theme (almost finished), more to attract comments, (commentluv, keywordluv, do follow, etc). More natural backlinks through content, plugin and theme development (first simple plugin just released and on trial).
    I hope that 2012 continues to bring you success.

  28. Sherryl, great way to summarize what you have been doing and what you would like to do. I find when we work on our own, we always say, we could do this better and that better. Sometimes we just have to move forward without the self-criticism! At least I need to.

      One of the ideas that I have going forward involves more collaboration. I haven’t worked out any of the details yet but it’s an idea that I’ve had for quite a while and I’ll definitely keep you in mind when I’m looking for input.     It’s been great to ‘meet’ you this year and your content is always first class, its not hard to see why your readers come back time and time again…btw I consider myself in that group too 🙂

    I’ve been putting in some serious planning time in the past few weeks. For 2012 I’m focussing on less input, more output…bringing more product out to the market. More connection and collaboration, and stretching myself & taking leaps of faith…instead of thinking an idea to death….I think that would be the perfectionist in me 😉

    1. Hi Pete, That seems like a healthy outlook – especially if what you’re already doing is working. I’ve been in a “weeding out” frame of mind lately – especially where it comes to social media. My Google Analytics have shown a strong shift away from referral traffic towards search traffic. So, I’m adjusting accordingly. One of the things I want to take a more serious look at is Google+. I may write a post about it soon. Is there anything specific that you’re doing that’s working especially well for you?

With the launch of a new program to support Baby Boomers getting into business, I want to work more closely with others who have specific expertise and can support the new fledgling business owners who realize that their future has to be in their own hands

  36. I’ll be excited to see what you do in this coming year, Sherryl! I find your posts a wonderful resource. I particularly appreciate your clear language in explaining the ins and outs of website construction, WordPress, and on-line access. I would love to see a “Back to Basics” column periodically where you go over some of what is basic to many but perhaps missed by some. I mentioned the topic of key words, which I think would fit in there. Any time you explain something that everyone’s heard of but perhaps not completely understood, I benefit (like the post on RSS feed).

    1. Thanks so much for your support Judy. I like getting back to the basics and there’s usually a slant that can be taken so that most people can learn something new.
